Active with the TGDP: Fall 2016 – Summer 2020
BA in English Literature and Linguistics (double major) (UT Austin)
Denise got involved with the TGDP as an undergraduate, as a way to feed her interest in dialect prestige, translation and phonetic transcription, and folk cultures. She enjoys focusing on Wendish/Sorbian speakers and their folktales, interactions of Texas German and African American English, and the effect of written materials on the standardization (or lack thereof) of Texas German. After graduating, Denise became an English teacher in the Czech Republic. In September 2019, she started graduate school at Indiana University, Bloomington, to further her research on non-standard speech, speech disorders, orality, and text. As an enthusiast on language documentation and folklore documentation, she is excited to connect her experience with these projects to her literary scholarship.
